Tobermory Race 2023
The Tobermory Race has been going for many decades. In its heyday over a hundred boats would race to the west coast using the Crinan Canal. It was the start of the Glasgow Fair Holidays, and many families would use the race as a competitive way to get west from the Clyde. 2022: The race this year starts on 15th July at Rothesay. It is in two parts, Rothesay to Ardrishaig, and then on Monday after the Crinal Canal transit, part 2 is Loch Craignish to Tobermory. There's an alternate option for part one. Race round the Mull of Kintyre to Crinan, starting from the same start line as those going through the canal.
The start of part 2 can often be dictated by the tides. Two tidal gates to be negotiated include the Dorus Mor, and the Sound of Luing. Ideally a start time allows passage through these, and then the Sound of Mull all on a flooding tide, meaning tide with the race all the way.
On reaching Tobermory on Monday afternoon, there's a usually a dinner. Details will be posted here when available.
