Trophies and Trials

The Clyde Cruising Club met on 20 March in the Leonardo Hotel Glasgow for the final of the 2024 Winter Meets.

After a brief update from the Commodore, a number of trophies were presented to those who had been unable to receive them at the Annual Prize Giving. These included:

  • Edward Mason. Edward has been the Editor of the Clyde Cruising Club Sailing Directions for over 17 years. His tireless diligence has made possible (and safer) the travels of so very many round the waters of the West and North of Scotland. Edward received the Todrick Trophy from Rear Commodore Sailing Clive Reeves. It would be hard to put into words the contribution that Edward has made, but suffice to say he is only the fourth holder of this Trophy for outstanding Contribution.
  • Geoff Crowley collected the Ferrier Seamanship Trophy for his tenacity in gales of last autumn and somewhat belatedly the Commodore's Jug. He also received his past commodores pennant from his successor.

Following the awards came another highlight: a talk by Ian Nicolson entitled 'A Yachting Disaster'. In his inimitable style Ian (still only 95 years old) took us through the trials (legal) and tribulations of a yacht owner who lost his rudder off Sri Lanka. Out came the fascinating nuggets about rudder design, the use of ham radio and the arrogance of a certifying authority who remarked they had never lost a case. It is clear one should not trifle with lawyers or Scottish Marine Surveyors.

It has been a highly successful series of Winter Meets. So our thanks to Clive Reeves for organising them all. And also thank you all who attended to pay tribute to the trophy winners achievements.

[Afternote: The Todrick Trophy was originally awarded to the winner of a Tobermory Race when won by 'Ayrshire Lass' and was gifted to the Club on the owner's death. It is presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution, and Edward Mason has most certainly done this. Present in the room to see the presentation were Rory McKinna and Ian Nicolson, two of the previous winners.]
